Digital illustration process for beginners: From brush and paint to graphic tablet and screen

Hi, I´m Pia, a digital and traditional artist. I come from both sides, traditional paint and brush on canvas and digital graphic tablet and screen. If you are new to the digital world or you wanna learn some tricks, I’ll show you step by step the process of making a digital illustration. This will take years of your life if you have to find it all by yourself on youtube etc. So maybe I´ll save you some time ^^.

Timeline: 2h

10 min: Welcome. Take your sketch and your digital device. 20 min: How to do an outline.
30 min: How to prepare for color.
30 min: Shadow and light.

30 min: Fine art.

What to bring:

I have experience with Photoshop and Procreate. Any other alternative program you have to figure out detailed functions by yourself. But most of them should work in a similar way.

  1. 1)  Procreate for I-Pad
-> Alternative program for Android tablets with pen: HiPaint You can watch this tutorial:

  1. 2)  Photoshop for Laptop and graphic tablet.
-> Alternative programs for Adobe: Gimp (open source for free); Affinity PHOTO Tutorial:

  1. If you want to start an illustration, bring a sketch of a little character. Doesn ́t matter if it ́s on paper or digital. It should be very simple, do not get lost in details – maximum size of a postcard. If the character is simple enough you may be able to finish it during the workshop.
